Tras muchos años de silencio, el 4 de Mayo la banda industrial Sulpher volvía a los escenarios en el Purple Turtle en Londres, no sólo tocando temas de su mágnifico Spray (del cuál ya hablamos aquí), sin también presentando nuevos temas de la continuación de su debut. SuicideByStar no se podía perder semejante evento, siendo Sulpher la banda fetiche de una parte del staff. Ya hablaremos del concierto, pero pudimos hablar un rato con Rob Hollyday (líder de grupo) y esto fue lo que nos contó:
SuicideByStar: Bueno, como he llegado tardísimo no me he traído nada. Quería haber preparado algo pero acabaremos haciendo una especie de diálogo/conversación que supongo que valga.
Rob Hollyday: OK
SBS: Primera pregunta…
RH: ¿Está grabando eso?
SBS: Mmm, debería… Sí. Bueno, primera pregunta ¿por qué tanto tiempo?
RH: ¿Entre los álbums? Básicamente Monti fue padre. tuvo un bebé, y yo me uní a Prodigy, luego anduve haciendo cosillas con Gary Numan, estuve un año en Marilyn Manson, volví a Prodigy… y bueno, ocupado constantemente, girando… Siempre que tuvimos algo de tiempo pensábamos en el nuevo álbum pero ha sido complicado.
SBS: Recuerdo que en 2005 sacásteis muestras de un minuto, más o menos, de un puñado de canciones. Le pregunté a Emma J (agente de prensa de Sulpher) por ellas y creo qué pensó «Mierda, el álbum se ha filtrado»
RH: Nah, ¡no, no, no! Lo que pasa es que pensábamos que lo íbamos a terminar antes y queríamos que la gente fuese escuchando un poquito de los temas nuevos en los que estábamos trabajando.
SBS: Recuerdo Losing Faith, Take a long hard look, por supuesto
RH: ¡Sí! ¿Nos has visto antes tocando esa?
SBS: En efecto, sí.
RH: ¿Sonaba suficientemente alto?
SBS: Sí, se escuchaba bien.
RH: Mola
SBS: Recuerdo especialmente Alone. El sampler tenía muy buena pinta…
RH: Sí. Esa no la hacemos esta noche, pero estará en el disco.
SBS: ¡Seeeehhh! Tenía pinta de ser el principio de la canción, muy suave, melódica, pero enérgica.
RH: Sí, tiene violines, chellos y una orquesta al final.
SBS: Calmada, pero intensa.
RH: Si, algo así. De hecho, está terminada, ¡pero no te la voy a dejar oír esta noche! (risas)
SBS: Cambio de tercio, nos interesa bastante tu opinión en ésto. ¿Está muriendo el rock industrial?
RH: ¿Muriendo? No sé si estará muriendo. Lo gótico no está muy de moda últimamente pero no nos consideramos góticos tampoco. Estamos más entre el rock/industrial/metal. No creo que esté muriendo. Tenemos ahí a bandas como Machine Head, Pantera, que siguen dando caña.
SBS: Sí, pero los peces gordos del subgénero andan de capa caída. Por ejemplo, Marilyn Manson, aunque bueno, habiendo trabajando con él, no creo que vayas a hablar mal de MM.
RH: Jajaja, ¡puedo contarte mierda de Manson! ¿Qué quieres saber?
SBS: Hemos asistido a su decadencia, además…
RH: ¿ A qué te refieres con decadencia? ¿A que no tiene tantos fans?¿A que está perdiendo su popularidad?
SBS: No, no. No hablo de popularidad. Digo que los álbums de ahora están muy por debajo del nivel de los 90.
RH: Bueno, a veces a la gente se le acaban las ideas, supongo. También intenta adentrarse en diferentes áreas. No quiere quedarse haciendo el mismo disco una y otra y otra vez, así que trata un poco de reinventarse. Lo cual es algo que nosotros mismos estamos intentando hacer. Spray es agresivo, un tanto iracundo… No queríamos hacer lo mismo otra vez, intentamos ser algo más melódicos, hacer mejores canciones.
SBS: Es jodido. Si repites la fórmula, los fans se enfadan. Si cambias demasiado, los fans se enfadan.
RH: ¡No puedes ganar! Espero que la gente no se enfade mucho esta noche.
SBS: Ahora vemos a Trent Reznor ganando Oscars pero no haciendo música que nos llegue al alma…
RH: Es muy viejo.
SBS: Le faltan drogas.
RH: ¡Seeehhh! Jajajaja. ¡Qué vuelva!
SBS: Aun mantengo algo de fe en Killing Joke, Rammstein, que no sacaron mal disco la última vez… Gary Numan, que al principio no me convencía mucho su último disco…
RH: ¿No es bueno?
SBS: Es un concepto muy diferente de Pure o Jagged. ¡Y ahora nuestra esperanza está depositada en Sulpher!
EmmaJ (agente de prensa de Sulpher): Os meten presión, Rob.
RH: Buff, presión. Lo haremos lo mejor que podamos! A ver qué reacción tenemos esta noche. Vamos a tocar 4 o 5 de las nuevas aunque seguiremos tocando las viejas, las cañeras.
SBS: ¡One of us, por favor!
RH: Abrimos con esa
SBS: Es probablemente mi tema favorito
RH: ¿Cómo así?
SBS: No es que diga nada especialmente pero es una canción en la que todo me encaja a la perfección, la atmósfera me encanta. No hay virtuosismo pero ni falta que hace. A veces aburre.
RH: Sí. Somos bastante básicos. Básicos pero efectivos. Hay bandas que sólo se dedican a «tiriuriuriuriuriuu» (imita un solo de guitarra). Por eso siempre me gustaron las bandas que no hacen eso. Una de mis favoritas es Killing Joke. The Cure, Depeche Mode me gustan mucho. Los Nails, Ministry, Skinny Puppy y a ninguna le dió nunca por ser muy virtuosa.
SBS: ¿Qué te parecen los últimos 4 discos de Ministry?
RH: (susurrando, para que no le capte el micro) Mierda (risas)
SBS: ¡Eso no se ha grabado, pero lo escribiré!
RH: Se había jubilado, no?
SBS: Se suponía que lo dejaban en 2008. Fui a verles y fue puro Thrash y cuatro clásicos al final. Un poco decepcionante.
RH: ¿Los viste cuando iban con Raven tocando el bajo y Joey Jordison? Esa fue la última vez que ví a Ministry y fue un buen show. Tommy Victor de Prong iba también.
SBS: Bueno, ya no sé qué más preguntarte, es una lástima no haber traído un triste guión!
RH: Nah, está bien, tío. Gracias por venir, de todas formas, y ¡disfruta del show!
SBS: Seguro. El gusto es nuestro. Gracias a vosotros, y aunque sabemos que es difícil mantenerse en la industria, y que, como J me decía, no queréis utilizar vuestras infuencias.
RH ¿A qué te refieres?
EmmaJ: Antes me comentaba que cómo con tu bagaje en Prodigy y Manson no iba a haber una forma sencilla de sacar algo con Sulpher. Sulpher quiere sacar cosas como Sulpher sin ningún tipo de apadrinamiento por parte de terceros.
RH: Monti y yo empezamos Sulpher antes de que me uniese a ninguna de las otras bandas. Sacamos Spray y giramos con él y después vinieron todas las colaboraciones. Queremos seguir con Sulpher a partir de Sulpher.

SBS: As I´ve been late I haven´t brought anything with me. I wanted to prepare the interview but I arrived here without a plot. We´ll make a kind of dialogue or conversation and I think that will do
RH: OK
SBS: First question…
RH: Is this recording?
SBS: Yeah, it should be… yes, it is. First question: why so much time?
RH: Between the albums? Basically, Monti became a father, he had a baby boy, and I joined The Prodigy and… well, I was doing very sort of things… Gary Numan, and then I joined Manson for a year, then came back to Prodigy and… just busy, busy, busy doing that, really. Constantly touring, but you know? whenever we got time off, whenever I had time off, we were constantly recording the new stuff.
SBS: I remember that in 2005 you realeased some short samples of a few songs. I asked Emma J (Sulpher´s press officer) about them and I think she thought «Oh, the album´s been leaked!»
RH: Nah, no, no, no. We thought we´d get it done quicker than we have done, so we wanted to let people hear a few little songs that we were working on at that time.
SBS: Because I remember there was Losing Faith, Take a long hard look, of course…
RH: Did you hear us just do that one?
SBS: Yeah, I did, actually.
RH: Was it loud enough?
SBS: Yeah, it sounded nice
RH: Cool
SBS: I specially remember one called Alone.
RH: Yeeiiiii, yeah, yeah, yeah. We aren´t doing that tonight
SBS: Not tonight?
RH: No, but it will be on the album, though.
SBS: Cool, because I remember that short sample as a massive thing. It seemed to be like the begining of the song, starting quite calm but as if…
RH: Yeah, it goes up into a chorus where it´s got violins and chellos and an orchestra at the end of it.
SBS: Yeah, it was quite calm and smooth but you could feel it was also intense, you know?
RH: Yeah! It´s gonna go somewhere. Yeah, it does do that! You will hear it when it´s…. It´s finished, it´s actually finished! But I´m not gonna let you hear it! Not yet.
SBS: A bit of a change in the topic, we are quite interested in your opinion about this: Is industrial metal/ industrial rock dying?
RH: Is it dying? Weeeeeell… Im not sure if it´s about dying. I mean, I don´t think that the kind of gothic music is around really anymore but we don´t consider ourselves a gothic kind of band. It´s more about rock, industrial, metal,… I dont think it´s dying, honestly. We have bands like Machine Head, Pantera, well, obviously Pantera aren´t still around… But, you know? all these kind of bands are still going, are still selling out in huge places, so…
SBS: Yeah, but it´s like if the big names not from metal but the subgenre aren´t doing too much nor too good on the last few years. You see for example, Marilyn Manson and, obviously, you are not gonna talk shit about MM because you´ve been working for him…
RH:I´ll talk shit about him, anyway! What do u wanna know? (laughs)
SBS: But we´ve seen Marilyn Manson decaying, now….
RH: How do you mean?He´s not getting… he´s losing…, he´s not as popular?
SBS: No, it is not about the popularity. It´s about nowadays´ albums are not as good as the nineties´ albums.
RH: People run out of ideas, i guess, sometimes. He also tries to go into different areas, he doesn´t wanna keep making the same record over and over and over again. So he just tries to re-invent himself. Which is a kind of what we wanted to do. You know, Spray is agressive and kinda furious but we didn´t want to just do the same thing again. We wanted to try to be a more melodic and have some better songs.
SBS: It´s quite hard, if you repeat the formula, fans get angry. If you change too much, fans get angry, so…
RH: You can´t win!I hope people don´t get really angry tonight!
SBS: We also see Trent Reznor winning Oscars but not doing any piece of music that touches our souls…
RH: He´s too old!
SBS: The lack of drugs, I think!
RH: Ha ha ha, he needs to get back on ´em!!
SBS: You know, I stilll keep the faith in a few of you. We´ve seen Rammstein doing their best since «Mutter», we´ve also seen Gary Numan, which, Emma has told me, is gonna be here tonight, doing an album which i first didn´t like too much
RH: Isn´t it good?
SBS: You have to understand it in a different way than Pure or Jagged. Rather soft and not that many guitars on it. Killing Joke have also released a great album. And now, Sulpher is our…
RH: It won´t be that. It won´t be that heavy! There are some heavy songs on it…
SBS: But what i mean is that you are our hope now in industrial rock!
EJ: High pressure there, Rob!
RH: No pressure! We´ll do our best. Yeah, we will see what the reaction is tonight because we are gonna play four or five new songs but we still gonna play the old ones, the heavy ones.
SBS: Yeah, One of us, please!
RH:Yeah, that´s the first song
SBS: Probably my favourite song ever.
RH: Why is that?
SBS: Nothing in particular but everything sounds well together, the atmosphere… There isn´t too much virtuosity but it isn´t critical not to have it.
RH: Yeah, we are quite simple. Basic, but effective. In some bands there is too much «tiriuriuriuriu». I´ve always liked the bands that don´t do that. One of my favourite bands is Killing Joke. I love The Cure, I love Depeche Mode, the Nails, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, all those bands, and none of them ever do that
SBS: What do you think about the last 4 albums of Ministry?
RH: (whispers, in order not to get caught on the mic) Crap. (laughs)
SBS: That wasn´t recorded, but I´ll write it!
RH: He´s actually retired, now, isn´t he?
SBS: He was supposed to be retiring in 2008. I went for their last tour and they basically played thrash stuff plus four of the old classics at the end. It was a little bit frustrating to be a goodbye tour.
RH: Did you see them when they had Raven playing bass and Joey Jordison from Slipknot on the drums? That was the last time I saw Ministry and they were really, really good. Tommy Victor from Prong was also with them.
SBS: I don´t really know what else to ask you. It´s a shame not having brought at least a few questions, you know? some kind of plot…
RH: That´s cool, man. Thank you for coming, anyway. And enjoy the show, of course.
SBS: Yeah, for sure. The pleasure is all ours! I know it´s gonna be quite hard, and as J told me, you don´t wanna use your influences to climb up…
RH: How do you mean?
EJ: When he first came he asked me that how was it possible that, with your background with the Prodigy and Manson… But that is your background with Prodigy and Manson, and Sulpher was gonna make it from Sulpher, not because of your links with Prodigy or Manson.
RH: Yeah, yeah. Myself and Monti started Sulpher before I played in any of the other bands. We released spray, we were touring it before I joined any other band. And we wanted to keep on as Sulpher from where we left it.
